- At 636 kilometres (395mi) long and 79kilometres (49mi) wide, Lake Baikal has the largest surface area of any freshwater lake in the world (31,722km2/12,248sqmi) and is the deepest lake in the world (1,642m/5,387ft) and among the clearest of all lakes in the world.
- It is the most voluminous freshwater lake in the world with an average depth of 744.4 m (2,442ft) and contains a total of roughly 20 percent of the world's surface fresh water.
- Lake Baikal is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
- Lake Baikal contains 27 islands; the largest, Olkhon, is 72kilometres (45mi) long.
- More than 300 rivers pour their waters into Lake Baikal.
- Lake Baikal is drained through a single outlet, the Angara River.
- Lake Baikal hosts 1,085 species of plants and 1,550 species and varieties of animals. More than 80% of the animals are endemic.
- The Baikal endemics - golomyanka is a completely transparent, scaleless fish. It grows to about 20cm (8in) in length and accumulates about a third of their body weight as oil. The golomyanka must descend again before the temperature of the lake rises above 7°C (45°F), otherwise their oils begin to liquefy and they die.
